HAWAIIAN FOOD

history

Dining in Hawaii brings pictures of luau food like roasted pig, salmon and poi. The Hawaiian cuisine today is a mixture of influences from different people like the Filipinos, Chinese, American, Polynesian, Japanese, and Portuguese who have migrated to the islands. Traditional Hawaiian dishes are mainly made of seafood, poultry, and local vegetables.

As soon as you visit the island, make sure to sample some of their native food. The Poi, which is a staple food on the island, is made of mashed taro root. It has the same consistency as mashed potato and is eaten like mashed potato or rice as a source of starch. Hawaiians eat their poi plain and served cold.

A local dish that is worth tasting is also the lau-lau, which is a salted butterfish wrapped in a luau leaf. It is usually steamed and best served with rice or macaroni. Sometimes the lau-lau is wrapped additionally in Ti Leaf. You should take out the Ti leaf before eating the lau-lau since it isn’t edible.

Poke is served as an appetizer or snack in Hawaii. It is a dish made of sliced raw fish or seafood that is mixed with salt, seaweeds, chili pepper and groundnuts. Restaurants offer a variety of poke to choose from and supermarkets sell frozen poke.

These are just some of the exotic dishes that you are going to taste in Hawaii. Be adventurous and try out the different local cuisines, you will find that they are mouth watering and delicious.
