Hitchhiking
Hitchhiking, which is known also as hitching a ride, or lifting a ride, is a
very cheap way of travel that is acquired by asking people for a ride in their
vehicle, most usually complete strangers who are passing by. Short distances can
usually be traveled by catching one hitch, though longer distances may require
you to catch multiple different rides. In most countries, hitchhiking is
actually not illegal. However, there are many countries that have laws that ban
hitchhiking, usually at places near dangerous locations like prisons or the
like, though this is simply a smart idea to begin with. Hitching may be cheap,
but you still need to think. In America though, some states and or cities have
banned hitchhiking altogether, for obvious reasons. Before planning on hitching
a ride somewhere, make sure you know the laws about doing so, in the area you
are starting and stopping in, as well as the areas you will be traveling
through.
The way a hitchhiker will signal a driver for a ride differs greatly from one
place to another. A hitchhiker will most usually just hold up a sign that
displays their desired destination, and sometimes will have a comment such as
“or bust”, meaning “as far as you'll take me”. A much more recent and modernised
way of hitching is to go online and find websites that will allow you to arrange
lifts beforehand, saving the hitcher from soliciting directly from the road.
This way of transport is a modern way of ride-sharing or carpooling, and is
often much more effective. More often than not, a driver will simply ask for
some communication and entertaining talk from the hitcher for the lift, deciding
to be nice and give the ride free of any monetary charge. But, in some cases
drivers may ask for help with fuel costs or the like. For this reason, many have
found that prearranging a ride through a website to be much better, that way,
they know up front if they will be expected to pay for the ride.
It has been said by many that the level of danger in hitching it horribly over
estimated, and that there are more than hundreds of thousands of rides or more
given to hitchers without any issue. This may be true, but it is still important
for anyone hitching or picking up a hitcher to exercise great caution. Use
common sense and think carefully before getting into a car with a complete
stranger. If you get a bad feeling about the person, move along. There is no
ride worth your personal safety. Always be alert and prepared to defend
yourself. You never really know who you are getting into the car with, and
taking necessary steps towards your own personal safety is a number one priority
for anyone who decides to travel in this way. Also, be careful about where you
try to hitch a ride from. Never try to get a ride somewhere if you see that it
could possibly endanger yourself or others. Move on to a safer location in which
to catch a ride, and then attempt to hitch.
