Hong Kong is one of the most beautiful and
exotic places in the world. As a result of being Cantonese with a long-time
British influence and more recent Chinese connections, Hong Kong is a city of
many faces. Travelers whom have seen the beauty and exotic city say that Hong
Kong is like a world of its own. On the surface, Hong Kong appears to be an
urban landscape that is missing what would make it seem to be a city in China to
most. It offers the same shopping malls found in many other large cities around
the world, and one of a kind food. But if you go beyond the comfortable shopping
malls and centers, and you will find beautiful and exotic sights and sounds.
Stanley and Repulse Bay offer world class beaches, even small islands offer
exotic seafood restaurants. Hong Kong is full of history, exotic beauty, sounds,
sights, and flavors you have never known.
Hong Kong Island is the site of the original British settlement, and is full of
rich diversity that reflects this fact even today. Because of the low land
supply, most of Hong Kong's famous skyscraper buildings can only be found along
the coastline on the northern section of the island. The main business and
nightlife districts can be found here. There is a peninsula bulging out south
towards Hong Kong Island called Kowloon and happens to be the highest populated
area in Hong Kong. The New Territories are a mix of farms, different industrial
installations, beautiful and mountainous country parks and even newer towns with
populations relative to the size of small cities. The Outlying Islands consist
of two hundred and thirty four other islands in the territory. Situated on
Lantau, one of the Outlying Islands, is Discovery Bay.
You can go anywhere in Hong Kong and not be far from the sea. Going to a good
beach is never much more than a short bus ride away. If you want a really good
beach though, then it is worth making the effort to travel, most likely on foot,
and look for the beaches of the New Territories. Hong Kong's urban beaches are
very well maintained and have showers and changing rooms, making them very
convenient. There are beaches where shark nets and life guards are present,
which make these particular beaches much safer for you and any family you are
with, so be sure to do your research before making your plans. Make sure to pay
attention to the local laws, as some beaches do allow pets or smoking on the
property. The hiking in Hong Kong is a great getaway and a perfect way to
appreciate Hong Kong's exotic and beautiful countryside, full of mountains,
beaches, and the like. Luckily, many hiking trails beginning points are
accessible by public transportation, making it more than quite easy to find a
good spot to begin a nice hike and escape the city for a great view of the
beautiful and relaxing countryside.
